Emerging Photovoltaic Technology and Green Hydrogen for Decarbonization
This 1-day master class consists of two parts. The morning session provides an up to date survey of key developments in silicon photovoltaics (PV) which is the most important PV technology for power generation. Industry topics include the total installed capacity, levelized cost of PV electricity, key PV manufacturers and solar farms.
The technical topics include the basic principles of photovoltaic devices, thermodynamic efficiency limit, state of the art crystalline silicon device structures (PERC, PERL, PERT), the double heterojunction silicon cells, carrier selective passivating contacts and the perovskite silicon tandem cell.
The afternoon session covers the generation of green hydrogen by electrolysis of water. Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas produced without using fossil fuel and uses only renewable electricity as the energy source. The electrolyzers discussed include the alkaline water electrolyzer, polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzer. The critical role of electrocatalysts on the surface of the anode and cathode to speed up the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions are highlighted.
This master class was first run in October 2022.
Career Coaching Course
The career coaching course is a unique X-day course designed for second or third-year university students studying for a Bachelor’s degree. It aims to equip students with introductory knowledge of specific technological fields to enable them to better plan for their subsequent careers upon graduation.
The course is divided into X 3.5-hour modules. In each module, the student will learn about the basics of a technical field such as semiconductor technology or biomedical technology. The current industry landscape and job opportunities are presented first followed by the basic scientific knowledge needed to enter this field.
This course bridges the gap between a traditional university course and the university career service. Each module will be given by a highly experienced industry professional or faculty member. Participants will have time to interact with the lecturer.
The first career coaching course will run from x-x August 2024.
